A piece of fake updates recently went viral on interactive media. The image claimed that the Reserve Bank of India would matter Rs 7 coins favouring former Indian group cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The image claimed that the RBI is doing this for his contributions to Indian cricket. However, the Press Information Bureau found this claim misleading in their fact check. Attaching the fake infographic to the tweet, PIB wrote,” The claim made in the image is #fake. The Department of Economic Affairs has made NO such announcement.” The PIB has also tagged the Ministry of Finance, DD updates, All India Radio updates, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Central Bureau of message.

The spread of fake updates can lead to the spread of fraudulent information about a person or place. The citizens should be thoroughly vigilant regarding such updates and not share it without any verification. In India, the Alt updates portal has debunked many such false claims. - This portal uses internet tools like Google Reverse Image search to determine the origin of viral photographs or videos. They also verify if the same image or video has been used earlier in similar or different contexts.
- They also search on the internet using various search filters (date, time etc) to find the origin of posts and messages circulating on the internet.
- They found contact with the community authorities or police in case of viral rumours. This is particularly done in case of communally sensitive claims to verify the truth behind them.
- They also review the original video or transcript to verify if the statements attributed to public figures have been edited to distort the message.
